The second wedding anniversary is cotton on the traditional British list. The modern list gives china, which is a lot of pressure to put on a two-year-old marriage's crockery.
Cotton is the one year where the folk metaphor earns its keep: separate threads spun and woven into a single cloth, stronger than either thread alone. Paper tears; cloth holds.
Why cotton, and where the year sits
Debrett's gives cotton for year two, following paper at one. The progression is from flimsy to durable, and cotton is the first material on the list that can take any weight at all.
It is also the first year with no ceremony attached to it. There is no convention about marking a second anniversary beyond doing something — which makes it a year where the material is useful, because it removes the blank page.
Cotton or china: the two lists disagree here
The traditional British answer is cotton. The modern list says china.
Worth knowing whose recommendation china is: the modern list came from a jewellers' trade association in 1937 (where the modern list came from). Notice which direction the substitution runs - from a cheap woven fibre to a breakable dinner service. That's not an argument against china, but it is worth knowing whose recommendation you are following.
Cotton is the British answer at two. China turns up later on the British list anyway, at the 20th.
"100% cotton" is a regulated claim, not a marketing phrase
Useful before you buy cloth as a gift, and almost never mentioned: fibre content on a textile product is governed by law in the UK.
The Textile Products (Labelling and Fibre Composition) Regulations 2012 require textile products to carry a label giving the fibre content, and any fibre-composition claim — on the label, the packaging, an advert or an online listing — must be accurate. So "100% cotton" is a statement a seller is legally accountable for rather than a flourish.
Two details worth having:
- "Pure" has a specific meaning. It may only be used where the product is made of a single fibre. "Pure cotton" on something blended is not a stylistic choice; it is a false claim.
- Only certain fibre names may be used — the permitted list sits in Annex I to assimilated Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011. Inventive fibre names are not allowed.
The label itself must be in English, durable, legible, visible and accessible, and where a product has components with different fibre contents each must be shown. (Source: Business Companion, the government-backed Trading Standards guidance.)
Practically: for the cotton year, read the composition label rather than the marketing copy. A blend is fine if you know it is a blend.
Five gift ideas that fit cotton
Ordered from most personal to most traditional. The rule for a second anniversary is that the thing should still be in use at the fifth.
Bed linen you would not buy yourselves
The most-used cotton object in any house, and the one people consistently under-buy. This is the year to fix that.
A blanket or throw that gets used daily
Cotton, visible, and in the room where you both sit. A gift you see every day beats one you see on an anniversary.
Something embroidered rather than printed
Thread on cloth is the year's material twice over, and embroidery survives washing in a way transfer printing does not.
A cotton-bound notebook, used for something
Only works if it has a job — the house, a garden, a list of everywhere you have been together. A blank book with no purpose is a nice object that stays blank.
A framed piece for the wall
Not cotton, and worth saying so rather than pretending. But two years in is exactly when the wedding photographs stop being new and start being worth doing something permanent with.
Avoid these
- Novelty cotton t-shirts. "Mr Right / Mrs Always Right" expires before the next anniversary. The cotton year deserves cloth that lasts.
- Anything that is cotton on a technicality. A cotton-rich sock multipack is not an anniversary gift, whatever the label says.
- Skipping the year because it is "minor". The early years are the list's foundation. The couples who mark year two are the ones who get to argue about what pearl means at year thirty.
Two years in, and what is worth keeping
The honest observation about year two: the wedding photographs are still the best pictures you own of each other, and by now they have stopped being new. Nobody has done anything permanent with them yet.
