The first wedding anniversary is paper on the traditional British list. The modern list gives clocks instead, which almost nobody in the UK follows.
Paper is the joke year: the material is deliberately flimsy, because the list starts modest and gets more durable as the marriage does. What almost no gift guide mentions is that there is an actual international standard for paper that lasts — and if the point of the year is a gift that outlives the joke, that standard is the thing to know.
Why paper, and what it is supposed to mean
Debrett's gives paper for year one. The reasoning usually offered is that early-marriage gifts should be modest, with the materials becoming sturdier as the years accumulate — paper, then cotton, then leather, then wood, then metals and stones.
That reading is legible and widely repeated, but treat it as folk logic rather than documented intent. Nobody published a rationale for the sequence; it is a pattern people noticed afterwards. What is not in doubt is the shape: year one is the flimsiest material on the list.
For a husband, a wife or each other
Whether it's for him or for her, the first anniversary is about the year you've had. Paper is the tradition, so a photograph from the wedding, or your names and the date, printed on paper follows the rule without stretching it. We print; we don't make cards, paper flowers or newspaper pages.
The modern list says clocks. It was written by jewellers
Alongside the traditional list runs a "modern" one, which gives clocks for year one.
It came from an American jewellers' trade body in 1937 - a date and a source that rest on a 2001 book rather than any surviving paperwork from the time, so treat it as well supported rather than settled. A rival story credits a public library, and that one doesn't survive checking at all. Where the modern list came from shows the working.
Paper is the British answer, and a clock is easy to skip, partly because a clock as a first-anniversary present is a little on the nose. Worth knowing that when a guide recommends the "modern" gift, you are reading a jewellers' trade recommendation.
Paper that lasts: what ISO 9706 is
ISO 9706 is an international standard titled Information and documentation — Paper for documents — Requirements for permanence. ISO 9706:2025 was published on 29 May 2025 and is the second edition, superseding the 1994 first edition. Its published scope reads: "This document specifies the requirements for permanent paper intended for documents. It is applicable to unprinted papers. It is not applicable to boards."
The standard sets permanence in measurable terms rather than adjectives. Reporting on the near-final draft that became the first edition, the Abbey Newsletter of September 1993 listed the requirements as:
- Tear resistance.
- An alkaline reserve of at least 2 per cent, meaning a content of an acid-neutralising substance such as calcium carbonate.
- Resistance to oxidation, set as a kappa number below 5.0.
- pH between 7.5 and 10.0, for the inner and outer layers of the paper.
Those figures are the 1993 draft as reported. We have not read the 2025 text, so treat the categories as durable and the numbers as belonging to the first edition.
The practical version: for a paper anniversary, ask whether the paper is acid-free and carries an alkali reserve.
Five gift ideas that fit the tradition
Ordered from most personal to most traditional. None of these are gimmicks, and all of them survive a long marriage.
A couple portrait, made from your photo
A first anniversary is early enough that the wedding photographs are still the best pictures you own of each other. Turning one into a portrait on paper marks the year with the year's own material.
A custom illustration on paper
The venue, the house, the street where you met. Commissioned line work is unrepeatable.
A handwritten letter, framed
The cheapest gift on this list and reliably the one that gets kept. Write it properly, on decent paper, and frame it behind glass rather than folding it into a drawer.
A photo album of the first year
Not the wedding — the year after it. The ordinary photographs nobody prints.
A first edition of a book that matters to you both
Paper at its most durable, and the one idea on this list that appreciates.
Avoid these
- Generic novelty prints. The whole point of paper-anniversary thinking is that the gift outlasts the year. A "1 Year Down, Forever To Go" print from a high-street card shop will not.
- Anything with a "best wife" or "best husband" superlative. Reads as ironic at year fifty; reads as desperate at year one.
- Vouchers for an experience you are going to do anyway. A weekend away is fine; a printed voucher for a weekend away is the gift equivalent of describing what you are about to give. Book it.
Buying paper that is worth keeping
Everything above points the same way: at year one the material is the easy part and the durability is the whole trick. Whatever you give, buy it acid-free and frame it behind glass.
